Admission Requirements

Admission and Training

The ACCESS PhD Programme is open to candidates holding a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad, which will be evaluated as part of the admission process. A minimum B2 level (or higher) of English proficiency is required at the time of admission.

Background knowledge in catalysis, industrial processes, plasma chemistry and physics, and materials science is considered an asset, although it is not a mandatory requirement.

Admission is based on:

  • evaluation of academic qualifications;
  • assessment of a research proposal consistent with the themes of the call;
  • an oral interview, including verification of English proficiency (the entire interview is conducted in English for international candidates).

The selection process is competitive, conducted online, and follows the procedures of the University of Messina, in compliance with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

Training Activities

The training programme is fully aligned with the objectives of the PhD and is clearly distinct from first- and second-cycle education, thanks to the use of innovative teaching and research methodologies. It combines:

  • specialised training closely linked to the individual research project;
  • interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary content;
  • advanced scientific, technological and methodological skills.

Special emphasis is placed on the development of transferable skills, including scientific communication and dissemination, research ethics, technology transfer and entrepreneurship, familiarity with European and international research systems, as well as advanced language skills, such as scientific writing and written and oral communication.
